The best episode of This American Life ever? I mean, maybe not, but it was pretty great.
I can't believe this is for real. You're just waiting for someone to be like, "Do you khave microfeelm? Tell me where ees microfeelm!"
So, before you hear this from any number of different news sources, I just want to say: I am one step removed from this guy.
That's right! The crazy artist making national headlines for building a secret apartment in a Rhode Island mall is none other than our good friend John's roommate. He was visiting home for the weekend and told us the story from his perspective: his roommate, a revered artist, had spent the past four years building a fully-functional apartment at the local mall, inspired by a commercial pointing out, innocently enough, that it would be great to live at the mall.
The man in question, one Michael Townsend, sat John down when he moved in and told him about the project. John was the only person not directly involved who even knew about it, and he didn't even know how to find it. He says that they told him he could "not tell another living soul." When Michael was arrested last week, John didn't notice, as it was very common for him to stay at the mall apartment for days at a time. When he was finally released and John got wind of the whole thing, he was elated, as he would now be able to tell people about it.
This cat is my new hero, and this project my new favorite thing. Learn more about it at Townsend's website.
Sidenote: the mall security guards who happened upon the apartment last week stole Townsend's Playstation. I didn't read to the end of any of the articles, as I had already heard the long version of the story from John, but I seriously doubt that detail made it in to any of them.
This gets a little tedious after a while.
